How QR decoding works

The image is scanned for the three finder patterns that mark a QR symbol, perspective-corrected, and the module grid is sampled into a bit stream. Error correction then repairs damage before the payload is decoded, which is why codes printed small, curved or partly covered still read. The decoder runs entirely in the browser, using uploaded images or the live camera through getUserMedia. Decoded payloads are shown as plain text with a copy button and, for URLs, a link you can open deliberately rather than automatically.

Privacy: scanning stays on your device

Camera frames are processed in page memory and never transmitted. That matters because QR codes often encode WiFi passwords, contact details or signed links; nothing is stored, logged or sent to a server, and the page works offline.

Scanning QR codes: camera, privacy and troubleshooting

Decoding a QR code is mostly about getting a clean image, and the two input paths have different strengths. The camera is convenient but depends on focus, lighting and angle: reflections on glossy screens and shadows across the code are the usual causes of failure, and holding the phone closer often helps less than moving it to a distance where the whole symbol is sharp. Uploading a screenshot or photo is more reliable for codes found on a desktop screen or in a document, because you can crop the area and remove distractions first. The decoder should handle the standard error-correction levels and try both normal and inverted colour schemes, since some designs print light modules on a dark background. If several codes are in the frame, the reader should report which one it found and let you pick another rather than silently choosing the wrong one. Privacy matters more than people expect: a scanned code is often a URL, and following it can leak the fact that you scanned it. A good reader shows the decoded content before offering to open it, which also protects against QR phishing where a sticker covers a legitimate code. Everything here is decoded on the device.
