Removing pages without breaking references

Deleting pages is mechanically simple but has consequences that only appear later. The page tree is rewritten, so anything that refers to page positions needs checking: bookmarks and the table of contents still point at the old page numbers unless the tool updates them, and internal links to a deleted page become dead. Page labels, the printed numbering that can differ from the physical index, are usually preserved rather than recalculated, which is correct when removing a scanned blank but wrong when the remaining pages should renumber. Form fields and annotations live on their pages and disappear with them, while document-level metadata such as the title and author is untouched. Two practical points save surprises. First, deletions are usually applied when the file is saved, so an incremental save may leave the original data recoverable in the file; a full rewrite removes it. Second, removing pages rarely reduces file size proportionally, because fonts, images and embedded resources shared with the remaining pages stay in the file.
