How barcode generation works

The generator encodes your data into the bar/space pattern defined by the chosen symbology, computes the required checksum, and renders the result crisply, as pixels for PNG or as vectors for SVG, which prints at any size without blur. Captions, quiet zones, module size and height are configurable so the symbol stays within the tolerances that handheld scanners expect. No expiry, no redirect service, no watermark: the code you export is the barcode itself.

Symbologies compared: which barcode for which job

Choosing the wrong symbology is the most common reason a barcode fails at the scanner. Code 128 is the general-purpose workhorse: it encodes the full ASCII set compactly and is the right choice for internal labels, asset tags, shipping references and anything that mixes letters and digits. EAN-13 and UPC-A are retail formats with fixed lengths and a mandatory check digit; they are reserved for products sold in shops and cannot carry arbitrary text. Code 39 is older, larger and limited to uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols, but it is still common in industrial and automotive contexts where legacy scanners expect it. ITF-14 encodes fourteen digits and is used on corrugated cartons rather than individual items. MSI is a numeric format found in inventory and library systems. Two technical details decide whether the printed code scans. The quiet zone, the blank margin on both sides, must be respected, and the narrow bar width (X-dimension) must stay above the printer's resolution: below about 0.25 mm, ink spread and dot gain blur the bars together. Always verify the check digit the format requires, and test the final print with the actual scanner your workflow uses, because a code that reads on screen may fail on paper.
