How signing works

This is a visual signature, not a cryptographic certificate: it is legally useful for most agreements, but it does not provide the tamper-evidence of a certificate-based digital signature.

Drawn, typed and cryptographic signatures

Signing a PDF can mean three quite different things, and confusing them leads to documents that are not actually protected. A drawn signature is an image or a stroke placed on the page; it looks official but carries no cryptographic weight, and anyone with an editor can copy or remove it. A typed signature is the same idea with a font. A digital signature is different in kind: it uses a certificate to compute a cryptographic hash of the document, so any later change invalidates the signature and a reader can verify who signed and that nothing was altered. For contracts and formal approvals, only the third provides evidence. Placement matters for usability: a signature box should sit near the relevant clause rather than on a cover page, and multiple signers usually need separate fields that can be filled in sequence. Date fields are worth adding explicitly, because a signature without a date is harder to enforce. Two details are easy to overlook. Flattening the file, merging the signature into the page content, makes casual editing harder but also removes any interactivity such as form fields. And scanning a printed, hand-signed page produces a valid-looking image but no cryptographic proof, so the trust comes from the process rather than the file. Everything runs locally in your browser.
