Tables, print areas and scaling

Spreadsheets and paper disagree about page boundaries, so a clean export starts with a few layout decisions. Excel stores a print area per sheet: if one is defined, only that range becomes the PDF, otherwise the converter uses the cells that actually contain data. Columns that overflow the page width are the most common complaint. Fitting everything to one page wide keeps tables readable but shrinks the type, so for wide sheets prefer landscape orientation and a fit-to-width setting rather than fit-to-page. Repeat header rows are worth enabling when a table spans several pages, because a printed page without column names is unusable. Gridlines do not print by default in Excel, so if the on-screen borders are important, apply real cell borders before converting rather than relying on the grid. Merged cells and wrapped text can change row heights, and hidden rows or columns stay hidden in the PDF, check whether they hold data you meant to include. Formulas are exported as their calculated values, which is what a reader expects, but it also means the PDF cannot recalculate if the numbers change later.
