How to use this tool
Overview
Typing Speed Test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Pick a 15, 30 or 60 second test, start typing the random word sequence and watch the live counters: remaining time, WPM and accuracy percentage. Correct characters turn green, mistakes turn red, and the current position is highlighted so you can keep your eyes on the text instead of the keyboard. When time runs out you get a final score with correct and wrong character counts and a verdict based on common typing benchmarks. The test runs entirely in your browser. No keystrokes or results are ever uploaded, and refreshing gives you a brand new word set for practice. How WPM and accuracy are measured
Words per minute is computed from correctly typed characters divided by five (the standard word length) over the elapsed time, so errors are not rewarded. Accuracy is correct characters divided by total typed characters. Mistakes are tracked as they happen and stay red until corrected; correcting them costs time rather than accuracy, which is why touch typists learn to slow down slightly to avoid them. The 15-second test rewards bursts, the 60-second test measures sustained pace, and comparing the three durations is the quickest way to see where speed falls off.

Privacy: keystrokes are not recorded
Typing tests are often used to practice real text that should stay private. Every keystroke is processed in page memory and discarded: nothing is transmitted, stored or logged, and closing the tab clears the session.
Improving your typing
- Prioritize accuracy first, speed follows error-free muscle memory.
- Use all ten fingers and avoid looking down; the highlight helps.
- Take the 60-second test weekly rather than daily to see real trends.
- Keep your keyboard at elbow height and your wrists neutral.
- Escape the modern benchmark of 40 WPM, then push toward 60-80.

WPM, accuracy and how to improve
Typing speed is usually reported as words per minute, and the definition matters: a word is standardised as five characters, including spaces, so WPM is really characters divided by five and by the elapsed minutes. Gross WPM counts everything typed; net WPM subtracts errors, and net is the number that reflects usable output. Accuracy dominates that calculation because corrections cost more time than the mistakes themselves, a typist at 80 WPM with 95% accuracy often produces less finished text than one at 60 WPM with 99%. Improvement comes from three habits rather than raw effort. First, touch typing with the fingers resting on the home row removes the glance at the keyboard that caps most people at 40-50 WPM. Second, accuracy drills at a comfortable speed beat speed drills at an uncomfortable one, because muscle memory encodes whatever you repeat, including errors. Third, short daily sessions work better than one long weekly session. Keyboard layout matters at the margin: QWERTY is universal, Dvorak and Colemak can help some typists but require relearning. Expect plateaus and measure over weeks, not days. The test runs in your browser, so the text you type is never transmitted or stored.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated? +
The Typing Speed Test counts correctly typed characters, divides by 5 (the standard word length) and scales to one minute. Punctuation and spaces count like any other character.
What is a good typing speed? +
Around 40 WPM is average. 60 WPM is considered good for office work, 80+ WPM is professional level, and competitive typists exceed 120 WPM.
Does the timer start automatically? +
Yes. The moment you type the first character the countdown starts. You can restart at any time with the restart button or by changing the test length.
Is my typing data stored? +
No. The test runs entirely in your browser. No keystrokes, results or statistics are sent anywhere.
