How page rotation works

Rotation, orientation metadata and mixed pages

Rotating a PDF sounds trivial, but there are two different things a viewer can do, and only one of them changes the file. The first is a display setting inside the reader: it turns the view without touching the document, so the next person who opens the file sees the original orientation. The second is a real rotation that updates the page's orientation entry, and that is what a converter should apply. The practical consequence is that a rotated page may contain content stored sideways and an orientation flag that turns it upright, editing the flag is enough for most readers, but a tool that actually re-renders the content is needed when a printer or a legacy application ignores the flag. Mixed orientation is the other common case: scanned batches often contain portrait and landscape pages in the same file, and the right workflow is to rotate only the pages that need it, using a range or a selection, rather than rotating everything and then rotating some back. Page size is preserved during rotation, so an A4 page stays A4, and annotations and form fields move with their pages.
