What your IP address reveals

Every connection carries a public IP address that identifies your network to servers. From it, public databases resolve the ISP, autonomous system number, organization, and approximate location, usually city level, sometimes postal area, plus the timezone. That is enough to geolocate content, enforce regional licensing and, in logs, to trace abuse. It is not your exact street address, and changing networks or enabling a VPN changes what sites see. IPv4, IPv6 and what your address reveals

Your public IP address is the one the internet uses to reach you, and it is not the same as the address your device uses on the local network. Home routers hand out private addresses from ranges such as 192.168.x.x and translate them to a single public address through NAT, which is why every device in a household can appear to have the same IP. Mobile networks add another layer: carrier-grade NAT shares one public address among many subscribers, so several people can be behind the same IP at once. IPv6 changes the model by giving devices globally routable addresses, often a rotating privacy extension rather than a stable identifier. What the address reveals is limited but useful: the ISP or hosting provider that owns the block, the approximate region, and the autonomous system number used for routing. It does not reveal your name, street address or exact location, geolocation is an estimate from registration and routing data, not a fix. A VPN replaces your visible address with the exit server's, and proxies do something similar for specific applications. If your address changes unexpectedly, that is usually normal: most residential connections receive a dynamic lease that can change after a router reboot.
