How the merge works under the hood

The tool reads each PDF, copies every page object into a new document and writes a single, valid PDF with one page tree. Pages are never rasterized: text stays selectable and searchable, vector graphics stay sharp, and embedded fonts are carried over unchanged. Because the merge happens with pdf-lib directly in your browser, the original page resolution is kept. Nothing is re-rendered, re-compressed or watermarked.

What can change in the merged file

Bookmarks, links, annotations and form fields are preserved, but a few things behave differently by design. Digital signatures become invalid as soon as any file is edited, so a signed contract is expected to show a broken signature warning after merging. Web-optimized (linearized) files lose that optimization and may take slightly longer to open on slow connections. Form fields with the same name from different files can merge into one field. The final file size is roughly the sum of the inputs, because pages are copied rather than re-compressed.

Privacy architecture: your files never leave your device

There is no upload step because there is no server-side processing. Files are read with the File API, merged in browser memory and offered back to you as a download. Closing the tab releases the memory, and nothing is written to a server, a database or a log. You can verify this yourself: open the browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab and merge a file. No request carries your document. After the first visit the tool keeps working offline, which is only possible because the whole merge runs on your machine.

Tips for the best merge result

• Rename files before uploading when the order matters, names make the list easier to scan.
• Merge related documents in batches if a single combined file becomes hard to navigate.
• Check page orientation after merging; rotate pages first if a scan is sideways.
• Compress the merged file when you need a smaller attachment for email.
• Keep the original files until you have opened and verified the merged document.
