Monospace layout, wrapping and page settings

Plain text has no styling, so everything about how the PDF looks comes from a small set of decisions. The typeface is the first: a monospace font keeps columns and ASCII diagrams aligned, while a proportional font reads faster but destroys any layout that relies on character positions. Line length matters for both: 80 to 100 characters per line is comfortable at normal font sizes, and long lines should wrap rather than be clipped, because a PDF has no horizontal scroll. Whitespace is preserved literally, which means tabs and multiple spaces need a consistent width, expanding tabs to a fixed number of spaces before conversion avoids surprises. Page size and margins determine how many lines fit: A4 with 20 mm margins holds roughly 50 lines at 11 point, so a file that looked like two screens may become three pages. Form feed characters, used by some tools to mark page breaks, can be honoured or stripped; long log files usually look better with soft wrapping, while source code is easier to read with wrapping disabled and a smaller font. Finally, check the encoding: UTF-8 handles accents, box-drawing characters and emoji, but a legacy file may need conversion first.
